    Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 1 1/2 Gallon Tall Jar made and stamped for "H. C. Smith, Alexa, D.C."

     

    This is the mark of the merchant Hugh C. Smith of Alexandria, Virginia. At this time of 1830 to about 1850, his pottery was made at his Wilkes Street Pottery under his ownership (1830-1833) and then by B. C. Milburn of Alexandria (1833 to about 1850) who bought the pottery from Smith's father in 1833 (See Eddie Wilder, Alexandria, Virginia Pottery 1792-1876, pp. 91, 125-178). 

     

    This beauty features a Tall and Stately Form, Rounded Rim, Pottery Stamp on the Shoulder, and a Garland of Leaves and 4 Tulips Around the Middle on the Front and a Chain on the Shoulder in the Back.  Stands 11 5/8" tall.

     

    Excellent Condition.  Two 1/4" chips on the bottom of the overhanging rim and a couple short surface craze lines at the bottom edge (closeup).  That's it!  No top rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.
