Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Superb 3 Gallon Stoneware Jug made and stamped by "F. Stetzenmeyer, Rochester, N.Y."
This is the mark of Frederick Stetzenmeyer who ran his pottery in Rochester from 1849 to about 1860 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, p. 74).
This beauty sports a Tall Semi-Ovoid Form, a Freehand Capacity Number 3, the Stetzenmeyer Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and an Elaborate Striped Tulip Executed with a Slip Cup. The tulip has four leaves and a blossom with five petals. All the decoration is accented with stripes for a 3-D effect. The cobalt is dark, bright, and shiny of a light gray clay for maximum contrast. The cobalt is fry free. Stands 16" tall.
Exceptional Condition. As made. No damage of any kind. A 1/2" flat chip on top of the handle, a 1/4" chip on the left shoulder and a 1/2" chip on the left base-- all kiln touches in the making.
