    Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this superb 1 1/2 Gallon Batter Jug made and stamped by "Cowden & Wilcox, Harrisburg, PA."

     

    This is the mark of John Wallace Cowden and Isaac Wilcox who ran the pottery in Harrisburg with this stamp from 1863 to 1880 (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners , pp. 55-58).

     

    The front features a Tulip Blossom Hugging the Bottom of the Pour Spout, a Steeple Flower on Each Side, a Large Tobacco Leaf on the Back, and Cobalt Accent at the Handle Holder and Rear Stabilizing Handle.   Retains an old bail handle.  Stands 8 3/4" Tall. 

     

    Excellent Condition. Three pinhead-size nibbles on the rim; three such nibbles, a 1/4" flake, and some staining on the spout; minor roughness on the face of the rear handle; and a 1" surface u-shaped ping line on the footer on the left side.  No hairlines, cracks, or restoration.
