Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 6 Gallon Jar made in New York around 1870.

The decoration is found on a signed piece of C. W. Braun from Buffalo, N.Y.  Charles W. Braun ran the old Heiser pottery in Buffalo from 1857-1896 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, p. 75).  The jar may also be Midwestern with a New York decorator.

It featues a freehand capacity number and an Iris Decoration Executed with a Slip Cup.  The iris has five striped leaves and a fancy blossom with lots of accents.  Stands 16" tall.

This is one of several pieces of stoneware I have encountered with a decoration heavily that seems to be heavily influenced by the Burger potters of Rochester.  I have yet to find the maker of these pieces which sport decoration that exceeds the typical Midwestern stoneware in detail and sophistication.

Excellent Condition.  A 1/2" chip inside the rim, and some surface wear around the center from use.  That's it!  No outer rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.
