Item 13205
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 2 Gallon Ovoid Jar whose decoration indicates that it might have been made by David Clark of Cornwall, Orange County, New York.
David Clark ran his pottery in Cornwall, New York at least by 1811. He is the father of the more famous Nathan Clark of Athens, N.Y. (William C, Ketchum, Jr., Potters and Potteries of New York State, 1650-1900, pp. 125-129).
Regardless of origin, this jar called to me from across the floor at a recent auction! Had to come home with me.
Circa 1820, this beauty features an Early Ovoid Form, Outwardly Tapered Rim, Applied Handles Set High with Cobalt Accents, and a Brushed Cobalt "2" Capacity Number Flanked by Leaves on One Side and a Cobalt Plant on the Other Side. The cobalt is as good as you can make it! Powerful. Measures 12 1/4" tall. Comes with a form-fitting and color matching lid that was made by Diebboll of Washington, Michigan.
Very Good Condition. A ping on the rim (closeups), four small chips together on the rim above one handle, and a 1/4" flake under one handle. No base chips, cracks, stains, or restoration.
