Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 5 Gallon Stoneware Churn made and stamped by "Burger & Co., Rochester, N.Y."
This is the mark of John Burger, Jr. who ran the family's pottery under this stamp from 1877-1879 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, p. 74).
This beauty sports the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and the Freehand Capacity Number "5" Framed by a Large Wreath with Bottom Bow. There are 58 loops in the wreath! The decoration is executed with a slip cup in bright cobalt. Stands 17 1/2" tall. Comes with a form-fitting period lid.
Excellent Condition. A chip inside at the bottom from use with a dash, even wear around the inner lid-seating ring from use, and a 1 1/2" chip on the inside of the right handle. No rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration. Extremely clean example.
