Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 3 Gallon Crock made and stamped by "Burger & Co., Rochester, N.Y."
This is the mark of John Burger, Jr. who ran the family's pottery under this stamp from 1877-1879 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, p. 74).
This beauty sports a Strong, Semi-Squared Rim, Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and a Freehand Capacity Number Cradled by a Large Wreath Executed with a Slip Cup. The wreath has a lot of detail including a bow at the bottom. Measures 10 1/4" tall and 12" wide across the top.
Excellent Condition. Two chips on the left handle (1/4", 3/4"), a narrow 1 1/4" chip on the underside at the edge, a couple faint 3" surface craze lines, and a 1/4" on the back near the base. No rim chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration. A 1" drying/firing line in the rim in the back in the making an glazed over (closeup).
