    Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 2 Gallon Jar made and stamped by "B. C. Milburn, Alexa"  

     

    This is the stamp of Benedict Calvert Milburn who ran the old Wilkes Street Pottery, once owned by H. C. Smith, from 1841-1867.  This pottery is discussed in detail in the marvelous book by Eddie Wilder, Alexandria, Virginia Pottery 1792-1876, pages 179-289.

     

    This beauty features a Rounded Tooled Rim, Applied Hooded Handles, Pottery Stamp, a Plant up the Front with Six Blossoms, and a Tulip on the Back with Chain Swag on each Side and a Wavy Line Above.  All the decoration is artistic and applied with a slip cup using strong cobalt.  Stands 12 3/4" tall. 

     

    Very Good Condition.  A 3/4" chip under the left handle, and four narrow chips on the base (1/4" to 1".  No  rim chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration. Glaze lines inside and a few outside from age.
