Item 12208
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 1 Gallon Decorated Stoneware Butter Crock.
The form and decoration indicate that it is the work of Richard Remmey who made stoneware in Philadelphia at the family pottery from the 1860's to the turn of the century (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, pp. 8-9).
Circa 1860, this beauty features a Tooled Rim with Groove for Ease of Tying a Cover Over the Top, Applied Handles with Cobalt Accents, and a Garland of Three Large Brushed Cobalt Leaves on Each Side. Very Bold Cobalt! Measures 8" tall and 8 1/4" wide across the top.
Good Condition. A 1/2" chip inside the rim, a faint 2" hairline from the rim on one side (closeup 1), chips on both handles, a semi-circular hairline and 1 1/2" chip on the underside with four 1 1/2" arms up the side from them (closeups 2, 3), and a U-shaped ping on the bottom edge (closeup 4). All the lines are tight. No outer rim chips, cracks, or restoration.
