Item 12214
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Rare Blue and White Stoneware Flying Birds Cookie Jar with Lid.
Circa 1900, it was made by the A. E. Hull Company of Crooksville, Ohio. It features a Top and Bottom Garland of Fine Flowers Framing Flying Blue Birds Soaring Over Apple Blossoms on one side and Two Love Birds Perched on a Branch of Apple Blossoms on the Other. Wild Flowers Separate the Two Scenes on Each Side. Diffused Blue Coloration. The lid repeats the floral border and flying birds. Stands 6 1/2" to the top of the jar and 8" to the top of the knob on the lid.
For a discussion of this piece, see Terry Taylor and Terry & Kay Lowrance, Collector's Encyclopedia of Salt Glaze Stoneware, p. 188.
I do not believe that I have ever had an example to sell in the 28,000 pieces of stoneware I have sold since 1999. And this example is exquisite. The mold lines on the jar are crisp and sharp indicating little previous use of the molds. The feathers of the birds and the veins of the flowers are distinct.
Excellent Condition. The jar has a faint 1" line from the rim inside that does not show outside (closeup 1) and the lid has a 1/4" chip on the edge (closeup 2). Otherwise, both pieces are as made. There is 1" glazed chip inside the rim and an imperfection on the bottom edge of the jar in the making (closeup 3).
