Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 1 Gallon Merchant Jug made and stamped for "Philip Hugo, 191 Grand St., New Haven."

 

The decoration indicates that it was made by Samuel L. Pewtress who operated the pottery at 71 Chatham Street in the Fairhaven district of New Haven, Connecticut from 1868 to at least 1887 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, p. 58).

 

Circa 1870, this beauty features the Merchant Advertising with Cobalt Wash on the Shoulder and a Bold and Bright Swirl Floral on the Front.  Stands 10 1/2" tall.  

 

Excellent Condition.  Minor nibbles on each side of the spout by the handle.  That's it!  No base chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.
