Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 5 Gallon Stoneware Jar that reads, "Eagle Pottery" and "From James Hamilton & Co., Greensboro, PA."
James Hamilton ran his pottery in Greensboro from the 1860's to 1880 (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, pp. 154-157). Eagle Pottery was one of his company monikers.
Dating to the 1870's, this beauty features a Wide Cobalt Stripe Accenting the Rim and Shoulder, an Eagle with the Banner "Eagle Pottery" in its Talons Flying on the Shoulder, and the Company Advertising and Capacity Number Occupying the Body. Additional cobalt accents at the handle terminals. Stands 15 1/2" tall.
Excellent Condition. Three chips inside the rim (1/4" to 3/4"), a 1/2" chip on each handle on the back terminal, a 1/2" chip at the base, and a surface-only 5" vertical craze line on the bottom of the right side not seen inside (closeup).
