Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Rare 4 Gallon Ovoid Jar made and stamped by "J. Welch."
This is the stamp of Jacob Welch who made pottery in New Portage, Ohio in the 1860's. His works are not commonly seen (F. Robert Treichler, A History of Northeast Ohio Stoneware, pp. 59, 64-67).
Circa 1865, this beauty features a Large 4 Gallon Size, Ovoid Form, Tall Rim, Tooled Shoulder, Applied Handles, Pottery Stamp on the Front Rim, and a Huge Brushed Cobalt Capacity Number and Tulip. The Tulip has four base leaves, stem with two more leaves, and a blossom with four petals and a squiggle on the interior. Bright and shiny cobalt was used throughout the decoration. Measures 13 3/4" tall and 10 3/4" wide across the top.
Excellent Condition. A chip inside the rim (1/2") and two outside (1/4", 1/2"), and some scattered glaze wear and light staining. No base chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration.
