Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this early 2 Gallon Ovoid Jar made and stamped by "I. M. Mead Portage Co, Ohio."
This is the mark of Ira Mead, one of Ohio's earliest potters who worked in Portage County, Ohio in the 1830's to the 1850's (See F. Robert Treichler, A History of Northeast Ohio Stoneware, pp. 27-29).
Made around 1840, this jar has an Early Ovoid Form, Tall Rim, Tooled Shoulder, Applied Handles, and the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Accent. Stands 11 1/2" tall.
Very Good Condition. A 1/2" flake on the inner lid-seating ring, a dozen chips and 1" surface line outside the rim (1/8" to 1/2"), and some staining from use. No base chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration.
