Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 2 Gallon Ovoid Jug stamped "Higgins & Co., Cleveland, O."

As far as we know, the Higgins Company was a distributor of stoneware made in the Portage/Summit County area of Ohio by makers like the Mead and Purdy families whose pottery so closely resembles pottery marked Higgins.  The Higgins Company was in operation at least from 1848-1851 (F. Robert Treichler, A History of Northeast Ohio Stoneware, p. 88).

This beauty features an Early Ovoid Form, Advertising Stamped on the Shoulder with Cobalt Wash, and a Huge Brushed Cobalt Double Tulip Decoration.  The floral boasts 6 leaves and 2 blossoms with 4 petals each separated by a swirly tendril.  Stands 13 3/4" tall.

Very Good Condition.  Two chips on the spout (1/2", 1"), a fine hairline through the handle, two horizonal scraps on the center of the left side, and a 1/2" chip at the base.
