Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 3 Gallon Ovoid Jug stamped "Higgins & Co., Cleveland, O."

As far as we know, the Higgins Company was a distributor of stoneware made in the Portage/Summit County area of Ohio by makers like the Mead and Purdy families whose pottery so closely resembles pottery marked Higgins.  The Higgins Company was in operation at least from 1848-1851 (F. Robert Treichler, A History of Northeast Ohio Stoneware, p. 88).

This beauty features a Larger Size, an Early Ovoid Form, Advertising Stamped on the Shoulder with Cobalt Wash, and a Huge Brushed Cobalt Tulip Decoration.  The floral boasts 14 leaves, two of which are open and dotted, and a blossom with 8 petals and a dotted center.  Stands 15 1/2" tall.

Excellent Condition.  A minor 3/16" flake on the spout and a narrow 1/2" chip on the underside at the edge.  That's it!  No hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.
