Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 5 Gallon Stoneware Churn made and stamped by "E. & L. P. Norton, Bennington, VT."
This is the mark of Edward Norton and Luman Preston Norton, the son of Julius Norton, who worked together in the family pottery from 1861-1881 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, p. 44)
This beauty sports the Classic Churn Form with the Pottery Stamp Residing Below the Rim and a Freehand Dotted Feather Gracing the Front. Stands 18 1/2" tall. Comes with an original lid.
Excellent Condition. Typical wear around the inner seating ring where the lid sits, a 1/4" chip under the left handle, and five small and faint y-shaped surface crazes (closeup). No rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration. Exceptionally Clean. The lid has a couple minor nibbles on the top edge of the raised guide, a 3/4" chip restoration on the top (3 o'clock in the photo) and a 3/4" chip on the underside (3 o'clock in the photo).
