    Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this highly decorated 2 Gallon Jar made and stamped by "A. E. Smith & Sons." 

     

    This is the work of Asa Smith and his sons, Theodore and Asa, who used this mark from 1849 to the early 1860's (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp. 58-60).

     

    This beauty features the Ovoid Form, Squared Rim, Tooled Shoulder, Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and an Amazing Four Tulip Brushed Cobalt Decoration.  The floral fills the front with cobalt top to bottom and left to right.  Measures 10 3/4" tall and 9 1/2" wide across the top.  

     

    Excellent Condition.  A narrow 1/2" chip inside the rim, a narrow 1" chip on the base, and a minor surface craze line near the base (closeup).  That's it!  No outer rim chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration. Some stone pings in the making including on the rim in the back and on the bottom front.
