Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Uncommon 6 Gallon Stoneware Crock whose decoration indicates that it was made by the Black Pottery of Somerfield, Pennsylvania.
George and Albert Black ran the pottery in Somerfield in the 1860's and 1870's (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, pp. 105-106).
This beauty features a Crock Form (Unusual for this Maker), Tooled Rim and Shoulder, Applied Handles with Cobalt Accent at the Terminals, and a Cluster of Five Flower Blossoms in the Black Style on Each Side. Measures 15" tall and 12" wide across the top.
Excellent Condition. Scattered glaze chips inside at the bottom, traces of water glass staining inside, and a half-dozen minor chips on the rim (1/8" to 1/4"). That's it! No inner rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.
