Item 11347
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Rare 2 Gallon Storage Jar made and stamped for the merchant "P. R. Fell & Co., Crockery, China, & Glass Ware, 84 Common Street, N. O."
The jar comes with three advertisements from Fell in the Times-Picayune of New Orleans dated from 1853 to 1855.
The decoration and stamp tell me that this jar was made by Asa Smith, his son Asa, and Howard Hobart who worked in Norwalk, Connecticut from about 1849 to the early 1860's. In the latter part of that period they sold stoneware in New York City on 38 Peck Slip using this kind of stamp (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp. 58-60).
This is a very rare jar. Fell imported it to New Orleans around 1855 before the Civil War from Connecticut or the New York outlet of Smith!
This beauty features the Storage Jar Form with Recessed Rim for a Lid, the Merchant Stamp, and a Large Brushed Cobalt Tulip with Two Large Leaves and a Blossom with 9 Petals. Stands 11" tall.
Excellent Condition. Three small chips inside the rim (1/4" to 1/2"), and some wear and light staining. No outer rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration.
