Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this rare Blue and White Spongeware Plate Commemorating the Assassination of James A. Garfield in 1881.
It was made and stamped on the back by "Burford Bros., E.L.O." This is the stamp of the Burford Bros. of East Liverpool, Ohio.
Dating to the 1880's this plate is 10 1/4" wide and features an embossed border of ivy with a profile of James A. Garfield in the middle. The plate is described in Terry Taylor and Terry and Kay Lowrance, Collector's Encyclopedia of Salt Glaze Stoneware as Ulysses S. Grant (p. 182), but it is James A. Garfield.
Exceptional condition. No damage of any kind. Some fine crazing of age.
This is a rare plate. I have one in my collection and this is only the second one I have ever seen.
