Item 11356
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 3 Gallon Crock made and stamped by the "N. A. White & Son, Utica, N.Y."
This is a work of Nicholas White and his sons, William and Charles, who ran the family pottery from 1865-1886 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp. 69-70).
Dating about 1870, this beauty features the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash and--the Main Attraction-- a Large Freehand Orchid in Strong Cobalt! It has two striped leaves, two blue leaves with cobalt-filled centers, and a blossom with one cobalt-filled and one striped petal. A blend of slip cup and brush decoration. The slip cup outlines the floral and provides the stripes, and a brush fills in the decoration. Measures 10 1/4" tall and 11 1/4" wide across the top.
Very Good Condition. Traces of water glass staining inside and some outside. A minor nibble and 1/2" flake outside the rim. No inner rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration.
