Item 11811

Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this sublime 1 Gallon Ovoid Jar made and stamped by "I. Seymour, Troy."

This is the work of the pottery of Israel Seymour in Troy, New York.  This pottery was in operation from at least 1816 to 1852.  This mark was used between 1830 and 1852 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, p. 66).

This beauty sports an Early Ovoid Form, Tall and Canted Rim, Tooled Shoulder with Applied Handles, Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and a Sizeable Incised Bird with Cobalt Fill.  A skillful hand gave the bird a graceful form with carefully drawn eye, wings, and feet.  Strong cobalt.  Even ground cover!  Stands 10" tall.

This is one of the largest birds on any Seymour stoneware that I can find on record.  Typically, they are much smaller.

Excellent Condition.  Minor nibbles and two shallow flakes inside the rimi (1/4", 3/8") and an 1/8"  nibble outside the rim.  That's it!  No base chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.  A chip on the right side toward the back from contact with another piece in the kiln in the making (closeup).
