Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this early 2 Gallon Stoneware Jar made and stamped by "R. Butt, W. City, DC.
This is the work of Richard Butt (c 1793 to 1865) who ran a pottery in Washington, D.C. from 1834- 1846. Butt's works are not common.
This beauty features a Semi-Ovoid Form, Squared Rim, Arched Handles with Cobalt Accents at the Terminals, Pottery Stamp and a Large Brushed Cobalt Tulip on Each Side. The tulip is 10" tall and has 10 leaves and a blossom with 6 petals-- all in rich and shiny cobalt. Stands 13 1/2" tall.
Very Good Condition. A 1/2" chip on the back of the rim, and chips all the way around the footer. No inner rim chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.
