Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Superb 3 Gallon Stoneware Jar made and stamped by "F. Stetzenmeyer, Rochester, N.Y."

 

This is the mark of Frederick Stetzenmeyer who ran his pottery in Rochester from 1849 to about 1860 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, p. 74).

 

This beauty sports the Stetzenmeyer Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, Freehand Capacity Number, and an Elaborate Striped Sunflower Executed with a Slip Cup.  The flower has four leaves and a blossom a 14 stripe center surrounded by 10 petals.  All the decoration is accented with stripes for a 3-D effect.  The cobalt is dark, bright, and shiny of a light gray clay for maximum contrast.  Measures 12 1/2" tall and 10 1/4" wide across the top. 

 

Excellent Condition.  Two colored chips inside the rim (1", 1 1/4").  That's it!  No outer rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.  Some fine bubbles in the thicker parts of the cobalt in the making.
