Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this early 4 Gallon Ovoid Jar made and stamped by "J. Bennage & J. A Sutherland, Springfield, Portage County, Ohio."
This is the work of J. Bennage and James A. Sutherland who partnered in stoneware manufacture in the mid to late 1830's (F. Robert Treichler, A History of Northeast Ohio Stoneware, pp. 61-62).
This beauty features an Early Ovoid Form with Tall Rim, the Capacity Number on the Rim with Cobalt Wash, the Pottery Stamp in Four Lines of Impressed Advertising on the Shoulder with Cobalt Wash, and Cobalt Accent at the Front of the Handle Terminals. Stands 14 1/2" tall.
Very Good Condition. A series of small chips and a larger 1/2" chip on the seating ring inside and inside the top rim, small nibbles outside the top rim, a 1/4" chip at the base, and some staining from use. No hairlines, cracks, or restoration. The chipping on the front rim right of center is in the making and glazed over.
