Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful Decorated Stoneware 1 Gallon Butter or Cake Crock.
The form and decoration make it easy to attribute this crock to Richard Remmey who ran the family pottery in Philadelphia from the 1860's until the turn of the century (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, pp. 8-10).
Circa 1870, this beauty features a Tooled Squared Rim, Applied Handles with Cobalt at the Terminals, and Two Brushed Cobalt Leaves on Each Side. Measures 4 3/4" tall and 8 1/2" wide across the top.
Good Condition. A 1" chip on the rim on one side and a 2 1/2" fine hairline from the rim by the handle on the other side (closeup). No inner rim or base chips, cracks, stains, or restoration.
