Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Rare 2 Gallon Semi-Ovoid Jar made and stamped by "J C Smith, Mogadore, Ohio."
James C. Smith was a registered potter in Mogadore, Ohio and was engaged to the daughter of the potter, George Bennage prior to her untimely death. Examples of his work are extremely rare (F. Robert Treichler, A History of Northeast Ohio, p. 62).
Dating to the mid-19th century, this beauty features a Semi-Ovoid Form, Heavy Tooled Rim and Pottery Stamp. Stands 14 1/4" tall.
Good Condition. Minor wear to the lid-seating ledge inside, two 1/2" chips inside the rim, a 3/4" chip outside the rim, and some superficial glaze loss in the center toward the right handle as shown. No base chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration.
