Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Uncommon 2 Gallon Stoneware Preserve Jar with Lid made for "H. C. Ward, Stoneware Depot, Zanesville, O."
Hudson Chaplin Ward was a stoneware distributor in the 1860's to 1880's (Jim Murphy's Checklist of 19th-Century Bluebird Potters and Potteries in Muskingham County, Ohio, pp. 408-411).
Dating to the 1880's, this beauty features an Uncommon Lidded Preserve Jar Form, Lid, and the Company Name, Product, and Address in 4 Lines of Stenciled Cobalt Advertising. Don't you just love the title, "Stoneware Depot!" Stands 12 1/2" tall.
Excellent Condition. Three narrow chips inside the rim (3/4" to 1 3/4"), and a surface-only 3" craze line on the left side (closeup). That's it! No outer rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration. Some glaze skips on the inner lid seating ring in the making. The lid is as made.
