Item 7542
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful Large 6 Gallon Crock made and stamped by "N. A. White and Son, Utica, N.Y."
This is a work of Nicholas White and his sons, William and Charles, who ran the family pottery from 1865-1886 (William Ketchum, American Stoneware , pp. 69-70).
Dating about 1870, this beauty features a Large Size, Pottery Stamp, and a Huge Paddletail Bird on an Orchid Branch. This is one of White's signature decorations and a perennial favorite with collectors. An abundance of rich cobalt blue. The bird is 11" from the tip of his beak to the tip of his tail. The branch has leaves at the base, an orchid blossom, and nine buds. Measures 13" tall and 13 1/2" wide across the top.
Very Good Condition. Three minor chips: inside the rim (1/4"), back of the rim (1/2"), and at the base (1/4'). Restoration for a 2" chip in the rim behind the left handle (closeups from both sides). No hairliines, cracks, or stains. A minor stone ping in one bud in the making.
