Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 5 Gallon Stoneware Crock made and stamped by "J. A. and C. W. Underwood, Fort Edward, N.Y."
This duo ran the pottery in Fort Edward from 1865 to 1867 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, p. 88).
This beauty features a Large Size, Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and Two Cobalt Birds on a Branch Decoration. Very nicely drawn with a multitude of individual feathers. Bright cobalt on a light gray glaze. Measures 11 1/2" tall and 12 1/2" wide across the top.
Excellent Condition. A 1/2" chip inside the rim and a faint small surface craze line below the right bird at the base. That's it! No outer rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration. A 3/8" clay void on the top of the rim and right of the decoration, and a stone ping on the tail of one bird in the making.
