    Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 3 Gallon Jar made and stamped by "A. J. Buttler, Manufacturer, New Brunswick, N.J." 

     

    This is the work of Alfred J. Buttler who worked in New Brunswick from 1862 to 1872 (M. Lelyn Branin, The Early Makers of Handcrafted Earthenware and Stoneware in Central and Southern New Jersey,  pp. 132, 139).  

     

    This beauty features the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash and a Freehand Capacity Number on One Side and a Brushed Double Tulip Decoration on the Other Side.  Stands 13" tall.  

     

    Good Condition.  Some waterglass staining inside near the bottom, chipping around the inner ring where a lid would sit, two chips inside the top rim (1/4", 3/8"), and some small glaze flakes by one handle as shown.  No outer rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.
