Item 12388
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Rare 2 Gallon Lidded Jar made and stamped by "G. Kellogg & Sons, Vineland, N. J."
George W. Kellogg created and ran a pottery in Vineland from 1866 to 1869. He ran it with his three sons, Isaac, George, and Charles. They did not continue the pottery after his death, so it only had about a three year run. See M. Lelyn Branin, The Early Makers of Handcrafted Earthenware and Stoneware in Central and Southern New Jersey, p. 129.
Branin had only seen 3 jugs by this maker and no other pieces. I cannot find any reference to this potter on the internet. This is the only piece by this maker that I have ever seen.
This beauty features a Tooled Shoulder, Applied Handles with Cobalt Accent on the Front Handle Terminals, the Pottery Stamp on the Shoulder, and a Brushed Cobalt Floral with Leaves and a Single Blossom. Stands 12 1/2" tall. Comes with a form and color fitting period lid.
Very Good Condition. Water glass film inside, minor nibbles on the inner lid-seating ring, a 3/8" chip inside the rim, eight small chips and a two 1" surface craze lines outside of the rim (1/8" to 3/8"), a 1/4" chip on the left handle and two on the right handle, and a 1/4" chip at the base. No hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration. The lid has a 3/4" chip on the knob.
