Item 11428
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 2 Gallon Semi-Ovoid Jug.
The distinctive decoration indicates that this is the work of Abial Price of Middletown Point, New Jersey who ran his pottery from 1840 to his death in 1852. It has a simplified version of the decoration as is found on his rare field jug as illustrated in M. Lelyn Branin, The Early Makers of Handcrafted Earthenware and Stoneware in Central and Southern New Jersey, p. 114-115. (see Branin, pp. 194-195 for more discussion of this potter). It is probably not Ingells from Taunton, MA who used a similar decoration because the spout is not his form.
This beauty features a Semi-Ovoid Form and a Brushed Cobalt "Flying Tulip" Decoration. The floral sports two large leaves with seven fronds and a blossom with nine petals. Stands 14 1/4" tall.
Excellent Condition. A 5/8" chip on top and a narrow 1/4" flake on the left side of the spout. Five chips on the base/underside (1/4" to 3/4"). No hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.
