Item 9386
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 2 Gallon Stoneware Lidded Jar made for "H. C. Ward, Stoneware Depot, Zanesville, O."
Hudson Chaplin Ward was a stoneware distributor in the 1860's to 1880's (Jim Murphy's Checklist of 19th-Century Bluebird Potters and Potteries in Muskingham County, Ohio, pp. 408-411).
Dating to the 1880's, this beauty features a Large Capacity Number and the Company Name, Product, and Address in 4 Lines of Stenciled Cobalt Advertising. Don't you just love the title, "Stoneware Depot!" Measures 10 3/4" tall. I have matched it up with a midwestern salt glaze lid that fits perfectly.
Typically the stencil on these jars is blurry, but this may be the sharpest stencil I have ever seen on one of these products.
Very Good Condition. Restoration for a 1/4" hole below the s in Zanesville. Otherwise, no chips, hairlines, cracks, or stains. The two small chips on the rim are in the making and glazed over. A 1/4" flake on the top edge of the lid.
