Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 2 Gallon Crock made and stamped by "Whites, Utica."
This is the work of Nicholas White and his sons, William and Charles who ran the Whites of Utica family pottery from 1865-1886 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp. 70-71).
This beauty features the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and a Large Running Bird with a Long Fantail Bird Proudly Poised on a Branch. This was one of Whites signature decorations. This birdie has 10 tail feathers. Measures 9 1/2" tall and 10" wide across the top.
Good Condition. A narrow 1 1/4" chip inside the rim, a 2" hairline from the rim (closeup), chipping under each handle, a faint 3" surface craze line under the left handle, and some scattered light staining. No outer rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration. Some bubbling in the cobalt at the tips of the tailfeathers in the making.
