Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this 2 Gallon Preserve Jar made and stamped by "John Burger, Rochester."

This is the mark of John Burger who founded the family's pottery under this stamp and ran it from 1854-1867 (William Ketchum, American Stoneware, p. 74).

This beauty sports a Tooled Rim with Inner Ledge for a lid, Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, Freehand Capacity Number "2", and a Fancy Tulip Decoration Executed with a Slip Cup.  The tulip has 3 leaves and a blossom with 5 petals.  All the decoration is accented with short lines for a 3-D effect. Stands 11 1/4" tall.

Fair Condition.  A 1/2" chip on the back bottom, crack from the rim on the back (closeup), and faint X hairline on the bottom.  No rim chips, stains, or restoration.  Displays well.  3" drying line inside in the making.
