Item 6941
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this gorgeous 3 Gallon Jar made and stamped by "J. Norton & Co., Bennington, VT."
This is the work of Julius Norton, his son Luman, and his cousin Edward Norton who worked in Bennington using this mark from 1859-1861 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp, 42, 44).
This beauty features the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and an Elaborate Floral Bouquet Executed with a Slip Cup. Rich and shiny cobalt like we expect from the Norton factory and detailed work from a master decorator's hand. Stands 12 1/4" tall.
Good Condition with a Restoration. Wear and a 3/8" chip on the seating ring where the lid would sit, a 1" hairline at the rim on the front by the right handle (closeup 1), a restorstion for a missing 2" piece of the rim in the back above the seating ring (closeups 2-3), and some light stain runs in the back. A horizontal surface firing line near the base from the front center to the right side center, and a surface drying line on the base-- both in the making (closeups 4 and 5).
