Item 3442
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 1 Gallon Jar stamped "S. C. Milburn."
This is the mark of Stephen C. Milburn of Alexandria, Virginia who potted in Alexandria from 1867-1872, having taken over the pottery from his father, B. C. Milburn (See Eddie Wilder, Alexandria, Virginia Pottery 1792-1876, pp. 191-196).
A nearly identical jar is pictured on Wilder on p. 196.
This beauty features a Carefully Tooled Rim for ease of tying down a waxed paper or cloth cover, and the pottery stamp. After the Civil War, pottery in Alexandria was rarely decorated. Stands 10" tall.
Good Condition. A 1" chip on the rim near the back, a 3/4" chip on the base near the edge, and a 5" hairline inside on the left side where the stain is (the line is not seen outside). No inner rim chips or restoration.
