Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Rare 5 Gallon Stoneware Milk Can made for "R. W. Hine" as indicated on the front in script.  Around the base it reads, "Mogadore, Nov. 14th, 1865."

This piece comes from the collection of F. Robert Treichler and is featured in his book, A History of Northeast Ohio Stoneware, pp. 59 as pictured above.  He attributes this piece to the pottery Frederick Sheldon who potted in the Summit County porton of Mogadore in the 1860's and 1870's.  Shards found at the site of Sheldon's pottery have decoration consistent with the decoration on this milk container (Treichler, p. 69).

This beauty features a very unusual Milk Container Form with Squared Rim, Inwardly Tapered Neck, Scribed Shoulder, Personalization in Script and a Double Floral on the Front, and the Location and Date of Manufacture on the Back.  Stands 16 1/4" tall.

I bought this piece without a lid, but had one that matches perfectly for size and color.

Excellent Condition.  How it has survived so well is astonishing.  There are a few glaze chips inside at the bottom, and surface firing or age lines outside around the base that do not go through (closeups).  That is all.   No chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.

A piece of historic stoneware with rare form, rare maker, and northeast Ohio history all over it.
