Item 9989
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Monumental 5 Gallon Crock made and stamped by "Whites Utica, N.Y."
This is a work of Nicholas White and his sons, William and Charles, who ran the family pottery from 1865-1886 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp. 69-70).
This beauty features a Large Size, the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and the Largest Fantail Running Bird on a Branch Executed with a Slip Cup. This is the LARGEST DECORATION OF THIS KIND THAT I HAVE EVER SEEN! The decoration is 13" wide and 8" tall. The crock itself is 12 1/2" tall and wide.
Excellent Condition. Three chips inside the rim (1/4" to 1/2"), three chips on the base/underside (1/4 to 3/4"), a narrow 1" chip on the underside of the right handle, and some small, scattered flakes on the body. No outer rim chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration. Some minor bubbles in the cobalt on the far right.
