Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 2 Gallon Stoneware Jug made and stamped by "White & Wood, Binghamton, N.Y."
This is the mark of Noah White of Whites Pottery in Utica, N.Y. who ran the satellite pottery in Binghamton from 1848-1888. He had a brief association with Wood as reflected in this stamp (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, p. 71).
This beauty features the pottery stamp and a Tall Orchid that Fills the Front. The orchid is created with slip cup that outlines the decoration and a brush that fills in the centers. The orchid has a blossom and eleven leaves, one of which is striped and dotted. The orchid was one of the White Pottery's favorite designs. This example is executed with bold and bright cobalt! Stands 14" tall.
Excellent Condition. Chips around the inside of the spout, probably from use with a wooden stopper, a 3/8" chip on the right side of the handle, and some minor nibbles on the base in the back. That's it! No outer spout chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration. The cobalt on one dot in the bottom leaf popped during the making.
