Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 3 Gallon Ovoid Jar made and stamped by "W. Roberts, Binghamton. N.Y."
This is the mark of William Roberts, son-in-law of Noah White of Whites Utica Pottery. He founded a branch of the family business in Binghamton in 1848 and ran it until 1888 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, p. 71)
This beauty features an Ovoid Form, Company Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and a Dotted Bird on a Branch Decoration. Measures 11 1/2" tall and 11" wide across the top.
Excellent Condition. Six minor chips inside the rim (1/8" to 1/4"), an 1/8" nibble on each handle, and three 1/4" chips on the base. No outer rim chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration. Dry cobalt and a 1 1/2" stoneware ping in the making.
