Coming to you is this wonderful 2 Gallon Jug made for "W. H. McGarvey, Wholesale Dealer in Wines & Liquors, Utica, N.Y."
This jug is easy to attribute to Nicholas White and his sons, William and Charles, of Utica, New York who ran the family pottery from 1865-1886 (William Ketchum, American Stoneware , pp. 69-70).
Dating about 1870, this beauty features the Cobalt Merchant Stencil in Five Lines of Bold Letters and the Top Dipped in Cobalt! Of all the potters with which I am familiar, only Whites made it a practice to dip the tops of their jugs in cobalt like this. And we appreciate it!. Measures 13 7/8" tall.
Excellent Condition. A minor 3/16" chip on the bottom. That's it! No spout chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.
A pretty spectacular Whites Merchant Jug.
