Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 3 Gallon Churn made and stamped by "Sawyer and Smith, Akron, O."
While a few signed examples exist. this potting duo remains a mystery to local historians! (F. Robert Treichler, A History of Northeast Ohio Stoneware, pp. 101, 113).
Dating around 1860, this beauty features a Semi-Ovoid Form, Carefully Tooled Top, Squared Rim, Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash on the Back, and Large Freehand Tulip on the Front. The tulip has ground cover, stem with two open and dotted leaves, and a blossom with six petals and s squiggley stamin. Stands 14 1/2" tall.
Excellent Condition. Small nibbles around the inner rim where a lid would sit, a half dozen chips inside the top rm (1/4" to 3/4"), and a 1/4" chip on the outside of the top rim. That's it! No base or handle chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.
