Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 2 Gallon Jar made and stamped by "S. L. Pewtress & Co., New Haven, Conn."

This is the mark of Samuel L. Pewtress who operated the pottery at 71 Chatham Street in the Fairhaven district of New Haven from 1868 to at least 1887 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, p. 58).

Circa 1870, this beauty features a Jar Form, Pottery Stamp, and a Cobalt Swirl Floral in Dark Cobalt Blue.  Stands 11 1/4" tall.

Excellent Condition.  Wear and minor nibbles on the inner seating rim, a narrow 5/8" chip on top of the rim that looks like a void where straw burned out in the making, and a few pecks to the glaze on the front bottom left.  That's it!  No outer rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.
