Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 5 Gallon Ovoid Stoneware Jar made and stamped by S. JOHNSTON & SON, BEAVER, PA.  This is the mark of Socrates Johnston and Son who potted in Beaver PA in the 1860's and 1870's (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, p. 137).

This beauty is a superb example of Johnston's pottery and of Beaver County pottery in general. Johnston pieces are not common, but this example has an Ovoid Form, Pottery Stamp, Ridged Shoulder, and a Large Freehand Brushed Cobalt Vine with Three Fuschsia.  The floral fills the entire front.  Additional cobalt at the handle terminals.  Measures 13 1/2" tall and 11" wide across the top

Comes from a prominent old Pennsylvania collection.

Excellent Condition.  Three small chips inside the rim (1/8" to 1/2"), a 1/2" chip under the left handle, and a 2" chip on the underside at the edge in the back.  That's it!  No outer rim chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.  Slightly out-of-round on top in the making.
