Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful Stoneware Mug made for "Richrd Briggs Co., Boston."  Briggs was a major retailer of china and glassware in Boston in the second half of the 19th century.  His advertising is on the back bottom (closeup 1)

This mug was made by the Whites Pottery of Utica, NY between 1890 and 1907 when they made their molded stoneware.  This mug can be seen in Christopher Bensch, The Blue and the Gray: Oneida County Stoneware, p. 59.

This beauty features Four People Playing Cards on the Front and a German Saying within a Fancy Cartouche on the Back.  The card game is Schwarzer Peter or "Black Peter" (closeup 2).  Schwarzer Peter was the Evil Twin of Santa Claus and was also an Old Maid-like Card Game.  The German saying on the back translates, "Wherever goblets filled with wine are clinked, one knows no sorrow, only joy and good cheer."  Stands 5" tall.
