Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Rare 3 Gallon Jar that reads, "From Spire & Duff, Nashville, Tenn."
The merchants Spire and Duff had this piece made in Beaver, Pennsylvania by one of the potters there-- possibly Russell who made a known signed water cooler for another Nashville merchant.
Dating around 1875, this beauty features a Top and Two Bottom Stripes that Frame the Company Advertising in Three Lines that Includes the Merchants' Names in a Dotted Banner. Stands 14" tall.
As you know, early Tennessee salt glaze stoneware is tough to find!
Very Good Condition. Chippage along the edge of both handles, with a 1 1/4" chip on the back of the right handle. Overall glaze wear from use. No rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.
