Coming ot you from Doc's Crocks is this rare 2 Gallon Stoneware Jar attributed to Philip Kabis, Shirleysburg, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania.
Kabis made stoneware in Shirleysburg from about 1864 to 1888. Phil Shaltenbrand (Big Ware Turners) comments, "Identifiable Kabis stoneware is very rare today and the potter probably never made large quantities of ware in his sixteen year tenure." (Big Ware Turners, p. 72). The decoration on this jar looks very similar to Kabis ware in Shaltenbrand (pp. 71-73).
This beauty features a very carefully tooled rim with vining hosting three flowers on each side, and additional cobalt around the handles. Stands 11 1/2" tall.
Excellent condition. An 1/8" nibble on the rim, a 1/4" chip on the base, and some wear from use. No inner rim chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.
